Mustang Parts Interchange
One of the hardest things about rebuilding a Comet is that because they weren't as popular it can be hard to get some of the small parts for them. Fortunately they share some parts with the very popular Ford Mustang, which there are lots of suppliers for. These are parts I know interchange onto my 1962 Comet and should fit other '60-'63 Comets. I've found guys selling these as comet-specific on ebay for as much as twice what the mustang vendors charge, so you can save a lot if you know these interchange. If anyone has any other items they would like to add to the list, contact me and I'll add them. (note: these are not parts for sale, but most can be acquired through Mustangs Unlimited, whom I've always had good luck with)
- Dome light and bezel from '65 Mustang.
- Spare tire cover & tool pouch from '65 Mustang (but not the trunk mat)
- Most '65 Mustang interior paints are a match for Comet colors
- '65 Mustang ABS heater plenum (is designed to replace the crappy paperboard plenum)
- '65 Mustang Heater Box Seal Kit (except cowl to heater box seal is too short)
- '65 Mustang side mirrors are correct replacements for the dealer-option Comet mirrors. (if you get them from Mustangs Unlimited get the better ones, the cheap ones don't hold up to and sort of road salt over the winter & pit very easily).
- '65 Mustang radio antenna.
- Pertronix electronic ignition module. (Replaces the points in your distributor for more reliable adjustment-free operation. For 6-cyl you want the model #1266 for car w/o a Thermactor. For info on installing it go here)
